TWD - Maple Wheat Cookies

For Tuesdays with Dorie this week, Michelle of Flourchild selected Dorie's Honey Wheat Cookies for us to bake. For some unknown reason, I had a hard time getting excited about this one. Maybe I thought we were baking sweet Wheat Thins, but whatever it was, I put this one off.

When I did make them, I substituted maple syrup for the honey  and left the lemon zest out. I may have added the baking powder twice, I won't really know for sure until I see the other TWD bakers' cookies. Whatever I did, I hope I can do it again and again because these were delicious! They're very easy to make and are soft, crunchy and sweet.

If you'd like the recipe, Michelle will have it posted. Better yet, buy the book we're baking from, Baking From My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan.

Maple syrup? Inspired idea. Do they taste kinda like pancakes? I think I will try it.

I think you doubled the baking powder since you have the puffiest cookies, I have seen and I like the look. I would like to try these. Aren't mistakes wonderful?

Spoken like a true mistake maker. You should see my burnt marshmallows.

Oooo, maple syrup! What a great idea! I made mine by the book (no surprise) except I added the zest of a whole lemon and I think it was perfect. Your cookies look terrific!

Leslie,
I think they look pretty darn delicious and don't you think they are just right for the "TEA Lady?" These just are tea cookies to me or coffee I guess. Whatever your preference may be. Don't you love those sleeper surprises. The ones you never expect to appeal to you?
Great idea-maple syrup. You girls and your great ideas. hmmm
Love that.

maple syrup as a sub is so smart! I might try that when I finally get around to making these

I had a hard time getting excited about these too but I ended up liking them so much more than I expected. Love your maple syrup sub - wish I'd thought of it as I like maple syrup a lot more than honey :)

These really were such a great surprise - I was expecting something bland, you know? But maple syrup must have given them a great flavor.

It sounds like these were a surprise hit for you! The maple syrup was a great idea.

When great minds think alike, they add some flavoring to cookies they thought would be a bit bland... LOL

Nice going with the maple!

Yours are so nice and puffy, maybe you did add extra baking powder? Sometimes I forget when I am halving recipes and almost add the full amount of one ingredient.

Sweet wheat thins...exactly! These were good, weren't they? Yours look delicious.

You made the cookie I want: yes to the maple syrup and no to the lemon. Perfect.

Haha, you kind of have a chubby checker cookie, but I love it. I also think maple syrup sound delish, maybe I'll try that next time and add some spices...yum!

I thought that combination of crunchy and soft was really good. I use maple whenever possible, so I'll have to try your variation sometime. Great looking cookies!

I have a jar of extra thick maple syrup that's been sitting in my fridge waiting for the right recipe. This might be the one. You're a fount of great ideas today - thanks!
