TWD - World Peace Cookies

This week's Tuesdays With Dorie recipe is World Peace Cookies. These are the cookies that my fellow bakers gush most about. I couldn't wait to make them.

Dorie warned they would be crumbly. As I stared at the bottom of the mixing bowl, I thought I was looking at a batch of brown beach sand, not a cookie dough that engenders world peace. I soldiered on, knowing the crumbly-ness was very common. I made rolls in plastic wrap and put them in the refrigerator while I was at work. I daydreamed about their chocolate-y goodness. After dinner, I sliced a few off the log. Instead of little cookies of peace, they became little chocolate bombs, exploding chocolate shrapnel all over my silpat. Tasty shrapnel, but an array of tasty crumbs of varying sizes is hard to serve on a cookie tray.

Two weeks in a row I have not succeeded with our TWD recipe. What happened to my baking mojo? In order to conceal the failure I ate the evidence. Shhh! Please don't tell. Let this latest failure be our little secret.

If you'd like the recipe, please check Jessica at cookbookhabit. And check the other TWD bakers out here. I know they were much more successful than...sob...I was. Not that I'm taking it too seriously that I failed...again.

These were a PAIN to try to put together and they didn't hold together really well either. I liked how they tasted but not how they turned out.
Sorry about your misfortune... :(

Oh, Leslie! I wonder what happened? Sorry that they didn't "pan out" for you, but at least the crumbs were tasty! You're still fabulous!

I had the same disaster with the Linzer Sables back in December...I literally had to beat this dough until it formed a bowl, only then could I shape it into a log. Sorry you didn't have success...for what it's worth, I understand!

Shrapnel, I love that. I made these twice and added an egg the second time and that helped a lot. You should try again with some more moisture.

Don't worry, I think lots of people had issues with crumbliness. Mine were crumbly too and I ate a lot of the evidence as well. They did squish back together ok. :)

AWW I'm so sorry!!! It doesn't look like you were the only one with difficulty though! I guess I was just lucky! Better luck next week definitely. :)

aww, sorry they crumbled on you. (shrapnel - lol) But hey, at least you had great-tasting evidence to conceal, right? :-)

Next time...try adding an extra TBS of butter and reduce the flour by 1-2 TBS. Sorry you ended up with shrapnel! ;)

see, i thought the secret was in the butter. i made sure mine was at room temp. i also stopped stand mixing at the choco chip add-in part and mixed by hand. we all have streaks of good and bad! you will make a comeback!

Sorry they crumbled but at least you didn't have to share! The evidence was all yours!

Hang in there sister. You'll get the mojo back. Probably doing something spectacular like the Cover Cake.

I didn't have so much trouble with the crumbling issue. I think it's because my butter was very soft, and because I made my log very small. I got 18 cookies on a sheet to give you an idea of size. There was a bit of crumble but not too bad. They are so good I would encourage you to try again!

Leslie,
You are a brave kitchen warrior and I have no doubt that you'll persevere right on into World Peace Cookie Stardom. Try the freezer next time and slice them when mostly frozen. You might have a little more luck if you mix a tad more. Hard for me to know on that one. Really sorry for your mishap. I really wasn't sure about the gingerbread last week either. This week, I loved the sandy texture, the sweet and salty and who would turn down good chocolate. Forward March Bakerwoman!
Thank you so much for stopping by for a visit.

I've seen a couple of similar mishaps. I wonder what happened? I am sure it was a bum ingredient or the room temp or something -- not you! I am glad that the shrapnel was tasty, anyway! I've got a feeling you are going to knock those floating islands out of the park!

Too bad! I wonder why that happened!

Sorry this recipe didn't work out. My cookies came out completely flat. At least it tasted good :)

Oh no! A lot of people seemed to have trouble with these. Dorie posted on them on Tuesday and she said it might be the cocoa. Give them another try - they're so good!

Oh dang, shrapnel is the right word for that! I'm sorry they gave you trouble but I bet the crumbs tasted delicious (maybe sprinkled on ice cream? I might need to try that!) I hope next week works out better for you! :)

Holy cow! I've never seen exploding cookies before - but I won't tell if you don't.

I'm sure they still tasted good!

Sorry you had trouble with these, but I'm sure they tasted good and make for a very funny post. Don't worry about your mojo...it'll be back! You are a very talented baker!

I think they would make a perfect topping to vanilla ice cream! Delish!
